A Significant Step Forward: Contrast Mammography at South Lancashire Breast Screening Unit
We’re proud to share a major milestone in breast cancer diagnosis, as contrast-enhanced mammography has now been introduced at the South Lancashire Breast Screening Unit, based at the Thomas Linacre Centre in Wigan.
This important advancement has been made possible with a donation made by us- because of our incredible supporters at Boot Out Breast Cancer. It will help to bring faster, more accurate diagnostic technology to patients across the region.
Improving Detection and Speeding Up Diagnosis
Contrast-enhanced mammography is a significant step forward in breast imaging. Compared to standard 2D mammography, it offers enhanced detection of cancers, particularly in patients with dense breast tissue.
One of the most impactful benefits is speed. The scan itself takes just 6–8 minutes, providing clinicians with quicker, clearer insights, helping to reduce waiting times and accelerate the diagnostic process.
This technology also offers an alternative to MRI scans, which can often involve longer waiting lists and may not be suitable for all patients. Contrast mammography is more accessible, cost-effective, and less stressful for patients, particularly those who experience claustrophobia.
Supporting Patients When It Matters Most
For patients undergoing breast assessments, the emotional impact of waiting for results can be significant. This new technology allows clinicians to provide reassurance, or next steps, far more quickly.
Being able to confirm or rule out concerns sooner not only improves clinical outcomes but also helps reduce anxiety during what can be an incredibly difficult time.
A Collaborative Effort
The introduction of contrast mammography has been a dedicated effort by the team at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, who have worked extensively to ensure the technology is implemented safely and effectively.
This has included specialist training, new clinical protocols, and close collaboration across departments to meet national guidance and ensure the highest standards of patient care.
